Every wokring person I know has a story to tell of that one fashion fiasco all offices have. Be it a bank, a marketing firm or even a university. There will be people who need to get arrested by the fashion police and thrown into fashion jail for the rest of their lives. Personally, I cringe at the sight of people who cannot pull of the latest trends but worse are those who try to make their own trends and fail miserably.
None of us want to be referred to as ‘the weirdo’ when it comes to fashion. Follow these lifesaving tips and save yourself from the label you don’t want.
Wear clothes that fit you well. There is no fashion that allows for clothes which are too tight or too loose! It has to be a good fit because nothing else works. If you turn up at work dressed like your clothes will come undone at the seams any minute, it is the least impressive thing you will ever do. Similarly, too loose clothes make it look like you are wearing a bag and gives a wrong perception of your body. These days, the loose kurtas are in fashion but if they don’t look good on you, please avoid them.
Wearing the appropriate clothes is essential too. If it’s cold and you are planning to go in your half sleeved lawn suit, please take a day off instead. Remember that what you like may not always be the way to go and change your style accordingly. Another important concept is the amount of skin you show. Don’t cross limits to an inappropriate level and don’t wear extra layers either. Look like a professional woman not an overdressed model.
Next is the color scheme. Some colors are just not for the workplace! Save the neon and bright oranges for the beach. The office doesn’t need the distraction of those. That said, don’t go for gloomy colors either. You may hate the workplace buy don’t dress for a funeral every day. Bright colors are in fashion this year. Make use of them but know when to choose appropriate colors for the office.
Another important thing is the type of clothes you wear. In Pakistan, very few women wear the professional dresses that women in the West wear. It is okay to wear your Khaadi kurtas and the designer lawn prints. But one must not over do it. Flowy clothes and complicated embroidered clothes are a no. Same goes for flappers that trail the ground and look very chic for a dinner party but aren’t so attractive for daily work wear.
Shoes are crucial too. Ill matching pairs of shoes are such a turn off. High heels are professional to a 2inch limit. Avoid studded sandals and fancy pumps. Wearing flats is acceptable but make sure they look good and not like you showed up in flip flops. It is best to stock your closet with a few neutrals, black, beige, grey, dull silver and white. These will go with almost everything that you don’t have matching shoes with. There is also no way a woman can make joggers work unless she is jogging. Throw them out if you have a pair to wear to work. Show off your pretty feet and get some girl shoes instead.
The best thing about fashion is that it keeps changing. That gives you ample opportunities to shop. So go ahead and make use of it. Hit the stores. Get a few latest things. Make them work for you. Don’t stick to just one style because it suits you. There is no way of knowing what will look better if you don’t give every thing a try.
