The truth about doing a home-based job

Work from home sounds like a fantasy job! You start dreaming about the perks you have to enjoy while sitting at home and working all day in your own workspace in PJ’s.

It’s tempting to think that you will have better work-life balance and you can be healthier since you can cook for yourself rather than snacking at your desk. Isn’t it?

Contrary to what you may think, it’s no paradise. So in case if you’re making a change and dreaming about working from home, then here are potential pitfalls of entrepreneurship should also be on your list of concerns as you plan your business.

Isolation

isolationAnyone who has worked in an office, school, or any other workplace becomes accustomed discussing work project and other social aspects of the workplace. However, when you work from home, you have less social interaction. You generally interact with others through phone or video conference. This routine gets monotonous and you start disliking this isolation at one point.

Distractions

Unlike working in an office, all of the distractions of home can make it difficult to concentrate on the work at hand. When family members are at home, the distractions can make working difficult. Sometimes instead of some important video conference you might just end up looking after your children’s needs.  Other distractions include: Laundry, dishes, sweeping can all distract you from your career duties.

Training

Have you thought of this? Who will initially provide you training with work? Who will help you and advice you if you are stuck in the middle of some technical work? You will not have the opportunity to learn from other people. You need to be personally strong at recognizing what skills you need and how you are going to get them.

Health Care

This usually means that benefits, such as health or dental insurance, are not offered. You may find that working at home is simply too expensive because you must pay for your own health care costs or health insurance from your own pocket.

Perceptions

Many people still don’t take work from home seriously. It can be considered as a gap on your resume. Sometimes, people with home employment are often treated as though they don’t work. You may expect drop-ins by people who assume that you are free to visit, simply because you are at home.

Promotion issues

promotion issue

You tend to stay in the same position for months and years maybe. Your job gets boring and suffocating. Your boss may forget you and you can be overlooked for promotion. However, you can avoid this situation with regular office visits such as once a week or twice a month. By these visits, you can remind your boss and prove your dedication to your career.

While many home workers enjoy their working environment, many others dislike it enough to quit the work for other opportunities. Assess what sort of person you are, how you work best and your current life situation. Some of these disadvantages may actually be advantages for you.
